Larsen Bervoets   °1979   (BE)

Larsen Bervoets (b. 1979, Antwerp, Belgium) The work of Larsen Bervoets is characterized by geometric hooks, trompe-l’oeil effects, color fields, light, shadow, and form. These elements translate into murals, rooftop paintings, paintings, paper sculptures, aluminum sculptures, assemblages, and collages. Bervoets’ practice embodies a highly technical and rigorous abstraction, executed on carefully found or constructed supports, resulting in a vibrant and sometimes even crisp aesthetic. Each work functions as a unique panel, composed of deliberately chosen color planes that reinforce the visual complexity of the composition. Order within his compositions emerges from sketches and notes, distilled from a multitude of impressions of structure and environment. His work investigates a continuous “push and pull” between form, light, shadow, and color, at times introducing deliberate spatial tension. Emphasis is placed on an economy of form and an openness to chance. Color choice is important — and at the same time deliberately destabilized. Rather than adhering to conventional color theory, Bervoets focuses on contrast and combination. His works are intentionally inquisitive and unconventional, showing little interest in obvious chromatic systems. The result is not meant to be perceived as minimalist; instead, the work is deliberately non-representational, avoiding imagery, metaphor, and narrative meaning. A geometric carnival that nonetheless often carries a calm, pictorial, and meditative presence, inviting the viewer into an intimate dialogue. Larsen Bervoets is a member of De Klup (Instagram: @deklup), a collective founded in 2004 together with Maarten Wagemans, Gerard Leysen, Johan De Meulder, and Wout Schildermans.
