Apple

In 2017, Luc Tuymans created 'Apple' as an exclusive edition for the members of the Kölnischer Kunstverein. The work is a digital print on cardboard, with a sticker on the back bearing the artist’s authentic signature. The exact edition size remains unknown, though it is presumed to be a few hundred copies.
Based on a 1993 painting, 'Apple' depicts an apple in muted grey and green tones. The fruit appears misshapen or hollowed at the bottom, without any clear cause. The work inevitably evokes both the multifaceted symbolism of the apple and the tradition of vanitas, thus extending far beyond the object itself.
